CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR

Larissya and Jinga ran through the narrow cracks that separated the purple and white buildings of Ulsk, while Adan howled behind them, and licked glowing drops of azure off of the dirt at the base of the tower behind them. The city was ancient, built by neither Onan nor Elim-and certainly not by Alorn farmers. It had been standing here and fading to alabaster for centuries uncounted. The walls of the jagged skyline were made of Bretak Shell-a mollusk from the Ocean, twice as long as a man and an arm’s length across.

“Head for the harbor,” said Larissya, pointing towards the south, as Jinga danced around the corner and she struggled to keep up. The sounds of Adan’s pursuit faded behind them. They dodged the few Elim they saw, although the streets were mostly deserted at this late hour. Ulsk was largely populated by fishermen, merchants, and a steady stream of visitors, in town to buy products that arrived on the wooden ships daily.

Larissya’s body glowed blue, and she felt strong. Adrenaline was rushing through her from the fall that should have killed her. She needed a sword. The crystal in her forearm grew warm as it reacted to the magic from Adan’s bag. She was getting flashes of images from the future. She tried to see through them and follow Jinga, who was running quickly but glancing back from time to time to make sure he wasn’t losing her.

Back and forth they ran through the narrow alleys, toward the smell and sound of the sea. It was after sunset, but there was noise ahead from the docks, where the work never really stopped. If Adan was behind them, there was no sign of him.

Jinga yelped as he turned another corner, “The docks!”

Larissya sprinted in front of the widgen, as he danced from one foot to another excitedly. “Come on, we need to get on that ship,” she said, pointing at a small trawler which was pulling out from the pier. She ran faster as the gap between the ship and dock widened. Jinga was right on her heels with a wild look on his face.

“Jump,” Larissya yelled as she vaulted off the pier, arcing high into the air and landing on the stern of the ship. Jinga sprang and did a complete flip, shooting through the air and landing next to her. Larissya crouched down and pulled Jinga down with her, peering over the side of the old trawler back at the city, which shone with dim gas lights.

Adan did not appear, as she expected. Ulsk grew small as they headed out with the fishermen, who were unaware they had been boarded.

“What do we do now, Larissya?” asked Jinga, looking at her adoringly. Her face showed strength, and her eyes flashed with magic. He blushed.

“We borrow this,” she said with a devastating smile, as she grabbed the rope holding a small dingy strapped to the back of the trawler. Jinga helped her untie it, and they shoved it off the back, diving in as it hit the water.
